I came across this blog post on vmblog.com (thanks for all the great posts) and thought is was a significant study to mention.
It is referring to a study done by ABI research on the projected growth of the Virtual Desktop industry to 5 Billion dollars by the year 2016. This is significant growth for an industry that I believe is one of the two emerging technologies for the future of virtualization. The other being cloud based computing and ‘as a service’ technologies. During the initial growth of virtualization it was mainly server oriented, which made sense as organizations worked on data center consolidation and optimization. That of course is still occurring but the next frontier is the move to desktop virtualization as well as the concept of desktop anywhere. Users are becoming more sophisticated and want access to their desktop wherever they are and on various devices. Virtual Desktop virtualization technology (VDI) helps deliver that. Citrix XenDesktop and VMware View are the market leaders today and there is a growing ecosystem of vendors offering complementary solutions as well. It is definitely exciting times for VDI and the ABI research backs that up.
